Number Plates/Personalised Registrations:
Only the vehicle
keeper do you have entitlement to apply to transfer or retain
its number plate. You should also be aware that not all vehicles
are eligible to participate in the transfer and retention of
registration numbers and not all numbers are transferable.
Vehicles must
be currently licensed, subject to annual testing (MOT) and available
for inspection. However, applications involving untaxed donor
vehicles will still be considered if:
The tax disc
for the donor vehicle expired no more than six months prior to
the date of the application.
The donor vehicle is not old enough to be tested, ie less than three years
old for cars.
In both the above circumstances, all other requirements of the number transfer
facility must be met in order for applications to be considered. Recipient
vehicles must be currently taxed in order to participate in the number transfer
arrangements.
To transfer
a personalised number The transfer scheme enables a registration
number to be moved directly from one vehicle to another. Only
the registered keeper of a vehicle is entitled to apply to transfer
its registration number. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
(DVLA) local office will action this.
Once the transfer
has been sent and everything is in order, the donor vehicle (the
vehicle giving up the cherished number) will be allocated a replacement
age-related registration number, the tax disc(s) will be replaced
and the MOT certificate(s) (where appropriate) will be amended
to show the replacement registration number.
You will then
be instructed to replace the number plates on the vehicles and
to return any old tax disc(s) for cancellation. The papers will
be sent to DVLA, Swansea for the records to be amended and replacement
V5C registration certificates will normally follow within 4 weeks
of receiving your confirmation letter from the Local Office.
However, if a V62 was used to support your application it could
take up to 8 weeks.
More and more
vehicle keepers are looking to personalise their vehicles by
choosing "cherished" or "special" registration
number for them. They may opt for registration numbers which
contain their initials or even their date of birth. Once on their
vehicle they usually want to move that number on when they change
their vehicles.
If you already
have a "cherished" number on your vehicle you can transfer
this to your next car or retain for a limited time period unregistered.
